From Break in Education to Top of the Class: Lisa Cadden Wins Barbara MacAuley Award

Thursday

Award recipient with family and staff member

A Newtownabbey student who returned to education after a significant break has been named the recipient of this year’s Barbara MacAuley Personal Achievement Award at Northern Regional College.

Lisa Cadden, a full-time student on the Access to University Diploma at the College’s Newtownabbey Campus, received the prestigious award in recognition of her outstanding work ethic, infectious enthusiasm and the positive impact she had on her fellow students.

The Barbara MacAuley Personal Achievement Award, now in its fourth year, was established in memory of Barbara MacAuley, a much-loved member of the College’s Access and Essential Skills team who passed away in 2021. The award is presented annually to an Access student who has shown exceptional commitment and resilience in their learning journey.

Lisa was nominated by Course Directors who described her as “a hugely positive influence” and praised her “enthusiasm and determination” in returning to education after time away.

Reflecting on her journey, Lisa said, “Coming back to education after so many years was daunting, but it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I wasn’t sure if I could do it, but the support from my lecturers and classmates gave me the confidence to keep going. Winning this award means so much because it shows that hard work really does pay off. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I hope my story shows others that it’s never too late to start again, whether it's for a career change, personal growth, or just proving to yourself that you can.”

Congratulating Lisa on her achievement, Barbara’s brother Tom McMullan said she was a worthy recipient who embodied the spirit of the award.

Tom said, “Barbara believed deeply in the power of lifelong learning and always supported her students to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. Lisa’s journey is a wonderful example of how further education can transform lives and I hope her success will inspire others to take that first step back into learning.”

Lisa, who returned to study with the aim of progressing to higher education, quickly became a role model within the classroom. Her lecturers noted her strong commitment not only to her own academic success but to supporting her classmates as well.

Alice McCann, Curriculum Area Manager for Access, welcomed Barbara’s family back to the College and said the award continues to be a fitting way to honour her memory.

Alice said, “Barbara had an unwavering belief in the potential of every student. Lisa’s success this year reflects the same dedication, warmth and drive that Barbara championed throughout her career. Lisa is an exceptionally deserving recipient and we are proud to celebrate her achievements.”

The Access Diploma at Northern Regional College is designed to support adult learners who wish to progress to university-level study. It provides a second chance for those who may not have followed a traditional academic route but are motivated to pursue careers in health, education, social work and other professional pathways.

Lisa’s story is the latest in a growing number of student successes from the College’s Access programme, which continues to open doors for those seeking to fulfil their potential later in life. Lisa is now studying Mental Health Nursing at Queen’s University Belfast as the next part of her journey.
